Why did you decide to join WiMS?
I joined WiMS because I was excited to become part of a community dedicated to supporting and empowering women in marine science. Through my participation, I hope to help others navigate the unique challenges women face in the region, including advocating for gender inclusivity in research. I’m especially passionate about contributing to mentorship, career development, and building a strong, collaborative network.
Each of the members of the SC are appointed for 3 years. What would you like to achieve during your time in the Steering Committee?
As a member of the WiMS Steering Committee, I’m focused on establishing a strong foundation for our mentoring program across all chapters, building on the progress already made and shared at the South Africa symposium. My goal is to create a supportive framework with clear guidelines, best practices, and measurable indicators to foster impactful mentor-mentee relationships. Additionally, I’m committed to formalizing the Réunion chapter by helping set up a dedicated team and defining local priorities to strengthen our presence in the Southwest Indian Ocean. Through local outreach efforts, such as World Ocean’s Day and other community events, I hope to expand WiMS’ visibility and build a robust, connected network of women in marine science across the region.
Why should women marine scientists join WiMS?
Women marine scientists should join WiMS to connect with a supportive network of peers across the region, forming a strong foundation for collaboration and solidarity. WiMS empowers members with mentorship, career resources, and a platform to amplify their voices, raise awareness of the challenges women face, and work together toward practical solutions for greater gender inclusivity in marine science.
Do you have any advice for young women planning to pursue careers in marine science?
My advice for young women in marine science is to stay curious and persistent, knowing there will be challenges along the way. Embrace your unique perspective, build a supportive network, and take on opportunities that push you beyond your comfort zone. Groups like WiMS offer invaluable support – investing in these networks early on can provide strength and guidance when you need it most. With resilience, self-belief, and a solid support system, you can make a meaningful impact in the field.
