Research Assistant in the Department of Environmental and Geographical Science, University of Cape Town
Why did you decide to join WiMS?
I have been concerned about the limited support provided to young women in marine science despite their role in social science research aspects within the WIO. Hence by joining WiMs I knew I would have direct access to a network of women who understand what it’s like to be a woman in science and are able to share their knowledge on how to overcome hurdles at different stages of the marine science journey/career.
What would you like to achieve during your time in the Steering Committee?
I would like to see an increase in WiMs membership and contribute to strategy to increase the participation and funding for women in marine science.
Why should women marine scientists join WiMS?
By joining WiMs, female young and early career scientists have an opportunity and platform to have direct access to a wider network of women are willing to support, provide advice and collaborate.
Do you have any advice for young women planning to pursue careers in marine science?
Never be afraid to ask for help. If you believe in it, then pursue it with all your will.
