Why did you decide to join WiMS?

Living in the coastal areas of Zanzibar, I experienced seeing women always left behind in the most of marine activities. I am considering WiMS as a network that join the women marine scientist in the region. Together as a team we can join our forces to uplift the young women marine scientist and balance the gender in the field, while involving other community members that works and benefits in one way or another in coastal and marine resources.

Each of the members of the SC are appointed for 3 years. What would you like to achieve during your time in the Steering Committee?

Strengthen the existing community-based groups for women that work in the field of marine sciences like seaweed farmers, fish mongers and gleaners. Provide technical support on the sustainable use of marine and coastal resources. Work with other women marine scientist in WiMS to inspire more women to pursue careers in marine science.

 Why should women marine scientists join WiMS? 

Through WiMS we have a strong network and share experience with other women who are expert in marine sciences. It can be easier for someone to develop her carrier, be involved in many marine issues in the region and a place to seek help when ever needed.

Do you have any advice for young women planning to pursue careers in marine science? 

It is time for women to join the field and balance the gender so that we can support each other from community level to academicians, researchers and other experts. The marine environment is always an exciting and a place for leisure you can always work and enjoying the nature.
