Why did you decide to join WiMS?

Joining the Women in Marine Science (WiMS) network was a natural step in Deepeeka’s journey as a marine scientist dedicated to advancing gender inclusivity in science. She was interested in joining WiMS as she strongly believes in its mission to empower, connect, and amplify the voices of women in marine sciences, a field where representation, particularly in leadership, remains a challenge. WiMS provides a platform to address unique professional and personal challenges faced by women marine scientists, especially in Africa, and joining the network aligns closely with her values of community, collaboration, and advocacy for equitable opportunities.

Each of the members of the SC are appointed for 3 years. What would you like to achieve during your time in the Steering Committee?

As a Steering Committee member for the next three years, Deepeeka is excited about the opportunity to strengthen the network’s support systems for women in marine science. One of her key goals is to create programmes to mentor and empower the next generation of young female marine scientists, as well as other early-career marine scientists.

Why should women marine scientists join WiMS?

According to Deepeeka, women marine scientists should consider joining WiMS because it offers a conducive community dedicated to both professional and personal growth. Being part of WiMS opens doors to invaluable mentorship, networking opportunities, and collaborations. The support provided by WiMS is essential for career development, particularly for those navigating challenges like work-life balance, fieldwork, and access to leadership roles.

Do you have any advice for young women planning to pursue careers in marine science? 

Deepeeka’s advice to young women planning to pursue careers in marine science is to stay strong and persistent despite the hurdles. Marine science is a challenging but incredibly rewarding field that requires dedication, courage and hard work. She urges young women marine scientists to remember that their contributions are invaluable.
