Why did you decide to join WiMS?
I joined WiMS as I believe that it is an increasingly recognised platform for women who work in marine science, not only in the regional but now globally. This provides a great opportunity to learn and share knowledge with others. The Seychelles, is a recognised leader in conservation, including marine
Each of the members of the SC are appointed for 3 years. What would you like to achieve during your time in the Steering Committee?
I would like to support and empower women to pursue careers in ocean-related fields and to disseminate knowledge, understanding in and appreciation of this field. There are currently many women in ocean science, but they are often not recognised for their hard work or fly under the radar. The challenges that come with being a woman working in marine sciences are often not understood and overlooked. We must identify and recognise these and support women to grow their careers and in their respective fields. At a minimum, I would like for the women in science to be provided with a strong platform to be seen and to be heard.
Why should women marine scientists join WiMS?
This is a great opportunity to receive and showcase accomplishments and challenges in marine science. It is an added opportunity to shine a light on ocean science and the great big blue from the perspectives of women. Nature is, after all, often characterised as a woman; mother nature/mother earth! Also, joining WiMS should open doors to scientists and support WIOMSA as a leading platform for marine sciences not only on a regional but now to a global scale.
Do you have any advice for young women planning to pursue careers in marine science?
My advice to any person looking for a career in marine science is to start broad with your first degree and to specialise preferably after gaining a few years of experience. Often your perspective on what you truly care for, or where you can have a greater impact as an individual, changes significantly after having worked in the field for a while. It is therefore helpful to have a broad background before specialising. But importantly, once you do find what truly matters to you, at whatever stage of your career, persevere and never lose sight of it!
