Margot Thibault who holds a master’s degree from the University of Reunion Island has just completed her doctoral research this past February. She is extremely passionate about creating research projects on marine litter in the region and carried out the first project on marine litter along the coast of Madagascar in collaboration with the CETAMADA organisation in Madagascar from 2019 to 2022, which was supported with funding from WIOMSA.
Her doctoral research studied the garbage patch in the Indian Ocean and she continues her research activities with equally passionate individuals. She reports that she has witnessed positive shifts in attitudes towards plastic pollution and gained increased motivation to work towards reducing this environmental threat.
Her greatest advice for aspiring marine professionals include surrounding oneself with like-minded individuals; remaining curious and informed as well as communicating research to different target groups.
Margot would like to see more female representation in marine research as principal investigators and lead authors. She believes that: Everything is possible when we believe in it.
